On: Natural Disasters

Details: As we have been witnessing a devastating earthquake in Haiti after many other natural disasters in the recent times, all kinds of questions and thoughts come to people’s minds. Why so much sufferings and devastations? Why such a poor country? Is this a punishment? What does it mean to me? This talk will address these questions and provide an Islamic perspective about such realities of this world.

Background Information of Dr. Nassimi
Dr. Daoud Nassimi is the vice-chairman of the Council of Muslim Organizations in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and he is teaching Islamic studies at Fairfax Institute in Virginia. He has been an activist and a student of Islam in the last 24 years in the United States.
He gives Friday Khutbahs in various mosques, and he lectures on Islamic and inter-faith topics at various forums in the DC area and around the country. He has been volunteering to serve the community in various capacities, including as a family and youth counselor, marriage celebrant, board member, Imam, and teacher.

Dr. Nassimi has a unique and combined educational background in engineering and Islamic studies. Besides earning his BS and Masters degrees in electrical engineeringand working in the fields of telecommunications and satellite communications for 20 years, he has also earned a diploma in the Arabic language and a second Masters degree in Islamic studies. He recently earned his PhD in Islamic studies with a thesis on a comparative review of some well-known English translations of the Qur’an.

It is Dr. Nassimi’s passion of helping others and serving Islam that led him to change his career from engineering to Islamic studies and community service.

Dr. Nassimi is originally from Afghanistan. He has a weekly TV show in a Satellite Afghan TV channel about the Qur’an and Islamic thought in both Farsi and English.

The purpose of MYO is to provide opportunities for the youth (12 years and older) to meet once a week with other Muslim youth, and learn more about Islam in order to promote our community.

Sunday, February 21st is the last day to bring in-kind donations (clothing and non-perishable items) for the victims of the earthquake to MCC. Your donations will reach the victims through Islamic Relief Fund and/or Helping Hands.

Cash donation can also be given to Sr. Neirouz Mills, Principal of the Sunday School.

- For Jummah sisters will pray in the Main Hall and bothers in both levels of the Masjid
