About Us

The Bayaan Early Learning Co-Op is a play based learning group that fosters a love for reading. Currently, our program caters to students aged 3-6 years old.  Bayaan was established in the Fall of 2017 as a natural extension of the Mommy and Me toddler group that had been operating for two years. It began when a close-knit group of families joined together to provide a high quality and holistic educational experience for their children.

Bayaan is housed in the Muslim Community Center at 15200 New Hampshire Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20905. Members meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Parents are required to contribute their time and resources to the operation and success of the program, per the ‘Parent Agreement.’ Each member brings valuable talents and a unique background to the Co-Op. Bayaan is not a DROP-OFF program; one parent/guardian is required to be on MCC premises (though not in the classroom) for the duration of the program.

Mission / Vision

The mission of Bayaan Early Learning Co Op (Bayaan) is to create a resource for families that are journeying through the process of homeschooling. Bayaan does not take full instructional responsibility of a student, but rather is a supplement to a parents’ own schooling regimen. Bayaan thrives due to the support and investment of like-minded families that share a commitment to seeking a better educational alternative for our children. Bayaan differs markedly from both public and private education options. The Bayaan educational experience caters to whole child development, while maintaining an eye on academic standards. Most importantly, all of our goals and strategies are informed by core Islamic principles. While Bayaan takes a play-based learning approach, our focus is on developing a love for reading and literacy. Stories are an important teaching tool; Allah (SWT) narrates the stories of Prophets and others in the Quran for precisely this reason. At Bayaan we recognize the importance of creating our own narrative through stories and think it a critical step in strengthening a strong Muslim identity in the West.

Our vision is to create a homeschooling hub that fosters community involvement and service and produces spiritually confident individuals that seek a life-long pursuit of knowledge and engage in the challenges of their age.

Tuition

  • Base tuition: $550/child for 12-week session [payable on monthly basis]
    • **5% discount for full payment upfront
  • Opt-out tuition: $700/child for 12-week session [payable on monthly basis]
    • Opting out absolves a parent from dedicating time in the classroom, but does not lift out-of-class obligations.
    • **5% discount for full payment upfront
  • Sibling Discount: 10% off for each additional sibling.

PARENTS ROLE

As a learning Co-Op, Bayaan relies on cooperation. This cannot be overemphasized. Parents are required to take on both on-sight roles (Classroom Assistant) and off-sight roles (Parent Committee) and maintaining a professional decorum is expected at all times. Parent Committees are essential in furthering Bayaan’s growth and sustainability; committees are required to coordinate fundraisers, organize field trips, engage in strategic planning, etc. Importantly, Bayaan is not a drop off program. A parent must remain on the premises of the masjid or otherwise designate another authority over her child’s care.

      • Complete Application
      • Parent Agreement
      • Liability Release Form
      • Background Check

**Pre-registration and regular registration dates are listed in the Bayaan calendar.

  • Can I stop by and visit the school before applying for membership?
    • Prospective members may have their child sit in on the last class of a session only subject to approval by Co Op administrator. For additional information Bayaan will have pre-scheduled Open Houses (See Schedule), wherein parents can ask questions and gain insight into the mission of our program and meet our team.
  • Does my son/daughter need to be potty trained to attend?
    • Yes. But the Co Op teacher and/or assistant can be available for minor bathroom help (hold hand to get on toilet, turn on faucet etc)
  • How many children are in each class?
    • Currently, there is a 10 student maximum for the Pre-K Co-Op
  • What is a typical day at school like?
    • The Bayaan classroom is a self-directed learning environment featuring a variety of learning centers and teacher-led small group activities. Each activity incorporates a weekly theme and is designed to nurture each child’s natural interest in books and stories.
    • A day at Bayaan begins with a free play activity as students come into the room and get settled in. After clean up, we gather as a group for teacher-led circle time featuring our morning rituals and the book of the day.
    • Next, we explore our learning centers including a small group activity with the teacher followed by a lunch period. The classroom routine concludes with a reflection circle and story time. The school day ends with either indoor or outdoor recess (depending on the weather).
  • Do you serve lunch? What are the policies for responding to food allergies?
    • Students are required to bring their own lunch–something light that does not require re-heating. Teacher and assistant will facilitate lunch period, handing out food and helping students open packages etc. Bayaan is strictly nut free. Students with additional allergies should clearly communicate said allergies with the administrator, as well as emergency protocol.
  • What if my child has problems adjusting to separation from me?
    • Parents should assess their child’s school readiness. While some separation anxiety is completely normal and expected, a prolonged period of maladjustment is a valid concern. Incidents such as these will be treated on a case by case basis, per the discretion of the teacher and administrator.
